Chiswick Vicar tackles the Inca Trail for charity
A vicar from Chiswick has raised thousands for charity after completing the gruelling Inca Trail.
Matt Boyes, Vicar of Christ Church in Townhall Avenue, Turnham Green, finished the 26-mile journey through Peru on October 28, earning £9,000 for the Haiti Hospital Fund.
The money raised means that the Maternity and Paediatric Unit at the Caribbean hospital now has over 60 per cent of the £14,000 required to complete the building.
Matt,39 said: "The trek was a truly humbling experience and made me appreciate what we have here in the UK.
"One of the most memorable experiences was meeting the teacher at a school with six pupils in a very remote village high up in the Andes, his commitment was amazing.
"He walked for over two days over mountains from his own village to the school stayed one week and then walked back before returning two weeks later."
The Haiti Hospital appeal is a Christian Organisation which is involved in providing life saving care to some of the world's most desperate and at risk people.
One in five children in Haiti die before their fifth birthday and the vast majority of births take place at home without any support.
"I hope the money raised will help to change this and I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me and enabled this wonderful project to progress," said the father of three.
Money was raised through private sponsorship as well as a charity auction at Pissarro's restaurant and the Gunnersbury Challenge 10k run in September.
