Closure of Kitchen Garden during 2009

Posted by Chiswick House Kitchen Garden on Oct 29, 08 08:53 AM in Clubs/societies

We have been in discussion with the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust over what kind of access we will have to the Kitchen Garden during 2009, when works will be carried out there to restore paths, walls and so on.

We are pleased that this work is happening - as restoring the Kitchen Garden as a garden is part of the reason we exist.

Unfortunately, this work means that our access will be disrupted. The Trust has confirmed to us that for safety reasons they will not permit access by children starting in January 2009. They have also confirmed that adult drop-in sessions will not be permitted from January but that they will review in June whether those sessions can be restarted.

To be clear, then, from January 2009 the following activities will be suspended at Chiswick House:
- Thursday morning School Sessions
- Weekly Duke of Edinburgh Award Sessions
- Weekly After School Gardening Club
- Weekly Tuesday Drop-In Sessions
- Monthly Sunday Drop-In Sessions
- Open Days

We will be allowed managed access so that we can maintain the garden while works proceed, we await details of what this means.

Beyond 2009

If works proceed to schedule, we are hopeful that by January 2010, at the latest, there will be full access once again. We are looking forward to having the opportunity to create an even more beautiful and peaceful garden in this space.

In Summary

These are uncertain times for us and the road ahead is not clear. On the positive side, we have achieved what we set out to, which is that the Kitchen Garden is being restored as a garden, and we have much to celebrate in that alone.
Penultimate drop-in work session: Sunday 2nd Nov 1-4.30pm

If you've been meaning to come but not got round to it, you are fast running out of chances... We will be tidying up and trying to move perennials out of the way of the approaching building works. Everyone welcome to drop in and do some gardening in pleasant company. Children very welcome but with a responsible adult. Equipment provided. Entry via the car park on the A4.

Plant sale

During the drop-in work session there will also be a plant sale of surplus plants. Trays of dark red Sweet Williams, pansies, fruit bush cuttings (currants, vines), herbs, etc.

We'd like to hear from you.
