Charity supports pensioners alone at Christmas
Christmas, which is normally the happiest time of the year, can be for pensioners the loneliest as families move away from each other.
But since 1984 a special Christmas Day party has been organised for those older people who would otherwise have spent the day by themselves.
Everyone enjoys a traditional Christmas lunch, gathers round to sing carols and then leaves for home with a present.
And organisers at Chiswick-based charity Pensioners Alone at Christmas (PAAC) are now looking for donations to allow it put on its party this year.
The party is held at Chiswick Day Centre in Bridge Street and attracts senior citizens from all over the borough.
Organiser Pauline Hart said: "It is so important that we do this. Many of our guests that attend can't get out in the community easily because of wheelchairs and other disabilities, so they end up sat in between four walls all day.
"Christmas can be a particularly lonely time of year. We want them to come here and have a great day."
PAAC also organise minibuses to help transport those who would find it difficult to reach the centre on their own.
In the past PAAC has been supported by local companies but they are finding this source of funding is starting to dry up.
"Many different companies in Chiswick have supported us, Singapore Airlines has been brilliant," Pauline said.
"However a lot of them have now moved out of the area and our funds are dwindling. Last year we only got £200."
Pauline is appealing for people to contribute money to the charity in the hope they will raise enough to make it a lovely day for elderly residents.
If you would like to donate to PAAC send a cheque made payable to Pensioners Alone at Christmas, 194 Southfield Road, Chiswick, W4 5LD.
We'd like to hear from you. Send your stories, pics and videos
