Chiswick swimmers make a splash

riverrace1main.jpgSwimmers were lucky the sun was shining as they braved the dark murky waters of the Thames at Chiswick Pier on Saturday.

Hundreds descended upon Corney Reach to watch the 40 swimmers take part in the Great River Swim, a 1,000m race to Chiswick Eyot and back, sponsored by Pissaro's restaurant.

16-year-old Lara Nyman won the race, making it the third time in seven years that the winner has been a woman, with her record time of 12 minutes 39 seconds.

Lara a triathlete from Hatchend said: "I'm really pleased, I love to swim in open water but I got tangled in the nets at one point."

Lara's favourite event is cycling with her mum and dad saying that they are hopeful that she may compete in the Olympics one day.

Spectators then enjoyed the Great River Race, which 300 boats of all colours, shapes and sizes saiing past spectators, who also enjoyed live music and a Moroccan themed barbecue.

The family fun day was organised by Chiswick Pier Trust with all money raised going to the trust and the RNLI Chiswick Lifeboat station.
