Day 13: Tyndrum

Posted by Lucy Proctor on Aug 4, 08 03:50 PM in

Making rapid progress down the West Highland Way. A lot of it is old miltary roads that were used to keep the highlanders in check.

Most people do it over seven days but I will take four. I am in Tyndrum, there's not much here, just a couple of shops, but I am resting for an hour before I do my last eight miles of the day.

Scenery incredible, midges terrible!

Fort William over the weekend was a complete nightmare. I planned to stop for a rest day but when I got there I spent three hours looking for accommodation - either it was full or it was just stupidly overpriced. One woman had a room but she wouldn't let me dry my clothes in the room, so I had to leave.

I was feeling really depressed, but once I got back on the road again I was fine again.

The scenery here is amazing, proper highland stuff and mountains.

Last night I slept on Rannoch Moor. On my way up people coming back down were telling me I must go back because the midges are so bad. It seemed OK as I walked up, but as soon as I picthed my tent there was just a cloud of them, digusting things. All night I could see them on the outside of the tent, thousands waiting for me in the morning, so I had to have a very detailed and quick plan of how to pack up - I emerged unscathed!

Currently at 230 miles, that's over quarter way. Aim to be in Central Glasgow on Wednesday night.
